Do you happen to consume cigarettes, tobaccos, or cigars? If so, I would like you to ask yourself this, why? Is it actually worth spending $21.03 of your hard earned money on 200 cigarettes that are eventually going to kill you? Is it worth putting nearly 4000 poisonous toxins in your body? In Canada alone, an estimated 37,000 people die each year, due to the consumption of tobacco products. In the United States, numbers are even worse as 480,000 people die from the use tobacco products. As death tolls rise, is that cigarette actually worth it? Why kill yourself and others around you with a bad habit? Think about it.
Smoking should be banned in North America as it kills many adults and teenagers, living on the continent. By-standers inhaling the cigarette smoke should not have to put up with the same consequences as one who consumes tobacco products. Personally, I believe smoking should be banned because it can cause one to get cancer, birth defects, and suffer from multiple diseases.
Cancer can easily be prevented without the use of tobacco. In a single cigarette, you can find nearly 4000 toxic chemicals, with more than 70 of them being cancerous. Such chemicals that can found in cigarettes include: arsenic (a substance used in rat poison), butane (lighter fluid), lead, volatile alcohol, naphthalene (a substance in mothballs), and carbon monoxide (a substance that cars produce). As smoking is one of the risk factors of lung cancer, people with lung cancer only have a 17 percent chance of living after 5 years. Researchers have also discovered that tobacco products such as cigarettes can lead to a dozen more types of cancer. Researchers have discovered that tobacco users can be affected with the following cancers: mouth, pharynx, larynx, leukemia, esophagus, liver, stomach, kidney, bladder, cervix, ovaries, breasts, and nose. If you are currently a smoker or tobacco user, quitting and staying off of nicotine products can help you lower your risks of cancer and reduce your addiction to tobacco products.
When you consume any tobacco products such as a cigarette, you inhale 4000 toxic chemicals. These chemicals enter your body and the smoke from a cigarette, can go from your lungs and enter your bloodstream. As blood circulates throughout the whole body, you can seriously damage multiple parts of your body. As for a pregnant woman, if she is under the use of tobacco products, she does not only harm herself but her child as well. The toxins in her bloodstream circulate through the placenta and enter the umbilical cord, now causing the baby to be contaminated with 4000 poisonous chemicals. The child will have a greater difficulty receiving the oxygen supply needed, thus causing their heart to beat at a faster pace. As the heart’s working harder, growth of the baby and development of the baby’s brain is negatively affected as well. Also, pregnant women should stop smoking as she may give birth too early. This can result in the baby having serious breathing, feeding, and other health problems. As the child is at a higher risk of getting asthma, it may also be infected by serious infections as well. If you stop smoking even weeks before the baby’s due date, you can save your new family some serious trouble.
Smokers are not only risking the various types of cancer, but can risk getting multiple diseases and certain body conditions as well. Tobacco products are known to lead to cardiovascular disease and emphysema. With cardiovascular disease, one can experience multiple heart attacks or strokes as well as chest pains and numbness in the legs and feet, as blood does not circulate throughout the body as well. As cigarettes are filled with nicotine, the addictive substance can lead smokers to have a higher blood pressure as well as atherosclerosis, a disease in the arteries caused by plaque build up. Smokers and tobacco users can be found at a higher risk of developing chronic bronchitis, also known as smoker’s lungs. With this condition, the respiratory system can be found swollen and even irritated. As there is an increase in mucus production, damage to the lungs can also be seen as well. As the continuation of smoking can cause kidney failures, high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes, which can lead to dementia, smokers should immediately quit.
Smoking should be banned in North America. As Canadians are paying higher tax rates, which go to health care and homeless shelters, we should not be affected by the poorly made decisions by others. We should not have to pay for people who choose to slowly harm themselves. Taxes can be lower and many lives can be saved across North America if smoking cigarettes and other tobacco products were banned. If governments banned smoking, without looking at the profits made from selling tobacco products, many lives can be saved. Cancer rates can be lowered and more babies can live on the earth with a healthier lifestyle. Banning smoking can help people be safe from the various diseases caused by tobacco products and live happily with their families. The action of banning tobacco products must be seen, as it will save hundreds of thousands of North American citizens.
